ToggleWhat was supposed to be a regular Friday afternoon, half of the work in the economy faced a Microsoft outage. Let’s see what went wrong, leading to this blue screen of death.
What is the Blue Screen of Death (BSoD)?
Blue Screen of Death may seem like a scary and mysterious episode of a top-rate web series, but for people working on Windows, this word has a different meaning. This error comes up with no initial warning, leading to all unsaved work being lost. BSOD is also known as stop error or stop screen.
This is how the screen appears when facing BSoD: a large emoticon and a QR code to understand the error more thoroughly.
These are some general causes of blue screen of death:
- Downloading incompatible software or apps causes clashes, resulting in BSoD.
- Issues in RAM, motherboard, and hard disk may lead to BSoD.
- Computer systems can display the same error due to overheating and getting burdened.
- Malware and viruses can corrupt your system and cause the same error.
In some cases, these reasons can lead to a Microsoft Office outage in personal systems. However, Microsoft Azure outage on a global level is entirely due to different reasons.
Cause of Microsoft Teams Outage Today, i.e. July 19th, 2024
It turns out that CrowdStrike, the cybersecurity company that makes software for multinational businesses, sent a flawed software update to customers who run Microsoft Windows.
Falcon software by CrowdStrike, developed to protect devices from cybercrimes, had faulty bugs, causing the system to crash.

The technological world is dependent on big companies like Microsoft and CrowdStrike. One single flawed software led to multiple sectors facing outrage. Lately, the company’s CEO stressed that the outrage did not result from any cyberattack.
This is a very, very uncomfortable illustration of the fragility of the world’s core internet infrastructure,”
– Ciaran Martin, the former chief executive of Britain’s National Cyber Security Center
Impact of CrowdStrike-Microsoft Outage
The company claimed 8.5 million Windows devices were affected by the Microsoft outage, 1% of total Windows users. The outrage caused total confusion and chaos across multiple sectors.
- In India, airports witnessed long queues, cancellations, and delays, causing inconvenience to both passengers and staff systems. Multiple airlines shifted to manual systems for boarding and check-in systems.
- In the financial sector, few banks under RBI and some limited local brokerage houses in the stock market faced problems due to the Microsoft Azure outage.
- After the outbreak, digital services at hospitals Max and Fortis were switched to manual processes. However, after implementing recovery measures provided by CrowdStrike, the system resumed normality.
- According to Bloomberg, Renault’s Maubeuge plant had to shut its operation due to a system glitch caused by the outbreak.
- News and media were equally impacted by the issue. Sky News platform in Britain went completely off-air, causing clutter among team members. Similarly, Australian media platforms like ABC and Sky News were not able to broadcast for a few hours.
Response from CrowdStrike
Omer Grossman, (CIO) at CyberArk said, “The current event appears to be one of the most significant cyber issues of 2024. The damage to business processes at the global level is dramatic.”
CrowdStrike confirmed promptly that the outbreak wasn’t remotely related to a cyberattack. The CEO – Kurtz, made a statement on the popular social media app – X that the team is actively working to improve systems impacted by a defect in a single content update for Windows hosts. The fix for the same has been deployed soon after the identification and isolation of the issue.
Microsoft Introduces CrowdStrike Recovery Tool
Various reports showed the Microsoft outage didn’t affect home and personal PCs. The global outage caused interruptions for airlines, news channels, IT systems, etc. The reason being, that the CrowdStrike Falcon update was designed for big and critical sectors that require protection from cyberattacks, leading to no outage interruptions to personal PCs.
To aid IT professionals in dealing with and repairing the persisting issue caused by CrowdStrike, Microsoft launched a recovery tool. Here’s how Microsoft’s Solution came to the rescue –
- CrowdStrike had already deployed a solution to the ongoing issue. However, noticing the significant effect caused by the issue on multiple sectors and leading to interruption in work, Microsoft introduced a recovery tool that fastens the recovery process.
- This tool develops a bootable USB drive, allowing IT admins to swiftly recover impacted systems. For this to work, users must have 64-bit windows and 8 GB of free space on systems.
- The said tool simply gets the affected Windows access via USB and automatically removes faulty files from the system. Via the method, there’s no requirement to log in to Safe Mode or get admin credentials.
- For further assistance, Microsoft has added complete instructions on its support site for respective Windows and machines operating on Azure.
In such a rare situation, it’s critical to stick to solutions and support provided by authentic platforms. In no time, cybercriminals took advantage of the situation and circulated messages, and emails, pretending to be the CrowdStrike team, or Microsoft support department, and offered fake support.
Reputable cybersecurity agencies including the National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) from the UK noticed an increase in phishing attempts and issued warnings for the same. Multiple CISOs, CEOs, and tech professionals from multinational companies came forward to urge the entire ecosystem to undertake proactive measures and be prepared for such incidents in advance. More strict protocols regarding launching a new software update will lead to a more secure and productive digital environment in the economy.
