To counter the growing frequency and intensity of these attacks, the government of India is consistently allocating resources toward strengthening <a href=\"https:\/\/threatcop.com\/cybersecurity-awareness\">cybersecurity in India<\/a> and building a more resilient digital ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To further these efforts, the Indian government has introduced a number of cybersecurity initiatives to protect organisations and the general public. Before we discuss these initiatives, let us look at why they are necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Need for Cybersecurity Initiatives in India<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following statistics show just how urgent cybersecurity initiatives in India have become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A December 2021 report by Business Standard stated that India was expected to be among the largest victims of cybercrime within two years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>According to the same report, cyberattacks were projected to increase by 200% year on year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As per data from the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), India recorded 1.16 million breaches in 2020, a threefold increase from 2019.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>According to government sources, 6,07,220 cybersecurity breaches were recorded till June 2021.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These figures, while from 2021, set the backdrop for why the government has been scaling up its cybersecurity efforts across India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Cybersecurity Initiatives Has the Indian Government Taken?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the statistics above make clear, India&#8217;s cybersecurity landscape needs serious reinforcement. The government is making significant efforts to enhance cybersecurity across India. According to Business Standard, the Indian government overspent its cybersecurity budget for the first time in eight years in 2021-22. In the 2022-23 budget, Rs. 515 crores were allocated to cybersecurity, a ten-fold increase from 2014-15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To promote a culture of <a href=\"https:\/\/threatcop.com\/cybersecurity-awareness\">cybersecurity awareness<\/a> in organisations and among the public, several cybersecurity initiatives have been introduced. Here are some of the major ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Cyber Surakshit Bharat<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What it is:<\/strong> A national initiative for cybersecurity education launched by MeitY to train government officials and CISOs on managing cyber threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To strengthen India&#8217;s cybersecurity ecosystem and complement the Digital India initiative, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meity.gov.in\/cyber-surakshit-bharat-programme\">Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY)<\/a> introduced the Cyber Surakshit Bharat initiative. Established in partnership with the National e-Governance Division (NeGD) and industry partners, this national initiative for cybersecurity education aims to build capacity, raise awareness, and enable government departments to create resilient IT systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The initiative includes an awareness programme highlighting the importance of cybersecurity. It comprises workshops on managing and mitigating cyber threats through best practices, and provides officials with cybersecurity health toolkits. The core objective is to educate Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) and the broader IT community. Here is what the programme aims to achieve:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Create awareness about prevalent and emerging cyber threats<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide an in-depth understanding of new initiatives, key activities, problems, and related solutions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Share best practices drawn from both failures and successes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cover applicable frameworks, policies, and guidelines related to cybersecurity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give key inputs to support informed decisions on cybersecurity challenges in respective functional areas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Training is conducted for CISOs and technical officials from the Central Government, Union Territories, State Governments, Public Sector Units, Public Sector Banks, Defence PSUs, Defence Forces, and technical arms of the Army, Air Force, and Navy. <a href=\"https:\/\/threatcop.com\/threatcop-security-awareness-training\">Security awareness training<\/a> for employees and officials follows the same principle, building the knowledge needed to spot and respond to threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Cyber Swachhta Kendra<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What it is:<\/strong> A botnet cleaning and malware analysis centre run by CERT-In to detect and remove cyber infections across India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also known as the Botnet Cleaning and Malware Analysis Centre, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csk.gov.in\/\">Cyber Swachhta Kendra<\/a> was set up by MeitY in alignment with the Digital India initiative. In line with the National Cyber Security Policy, this cybersecurity initiative contributes to securing India&#8217;s cybersecurity ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Working in collaboration with antivirus companies and Internet Service Providers, Cyber Swachhta Kendra creates a secure cyberspace by detecting botnet infections in India. Run by CERT-In, it notifies users and helps them clean and secure their systems to prevent further infections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The centre also analyses the characteristics of BOTs and malware and shares this information with citizens so they can remove these threats. It generates awareness around securing computers, mobile phones, data, and devices such as home routers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Cyber Jagrukta Divas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What it is:<\/strong> A monthly awareness initiative by India&#8217;s Ministry of Home Affairs, observed on the first Wednesday of every month by banks and government organisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recognising that sustained awareness is essential to preventing cybercrimes, India&#8217;s Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) launched <a href=\"https:\/\/threatcop.com\/cyber-jagrukta-divas\">Cyber Jagrukta Divas<\/a> under the I4C scheme. This cybersecurity initiative improves awareness across panchayat raj institutions, universities, public sector undertakings, banks, and schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under this initiative, all banks and government organisations are required to observe <a href=\"https:\/\/threatcop.com\/blog\/cyber-jagrukta-divas\/\">Cyber Jagrukta Divas<\/a> on the first Wednesday of every month. The MHA and RBI have asked all concerned organisations to prepare an annual action plan. Each monthly session lasts one hour and covers cybersecurity best practices, cyber hygiene, and the importance of staying alert online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ministry of Home Affairs has defined four topic units that every organisation&#8217;s annual action plan must cover, while giving each institution flexibility to choose the specific topics within those units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to these three cybersecurity initiatives, the Indian government has introduced several other measures to strengthen and promote cybersecurity.
