class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Similarly, in 2018, Facebook was hit hard in the gut when it was forced to take down its mobile web analytics application, Onavo Protect, from the iOS App Store. Onavo, a Facebook-owned-Israeli-application, was not only found guilty of developing and using spyware that monitors users\u2019 activities and also works as a data collection tool for recording data of the usage of other applications.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-10087 size-full\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"676\" src=\"https:\/\/threatcop.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/NordVPN.jpg\" alt=\"Facebook Data Breach\" class=\"wp-image-10087\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">(Source: NordVPN)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The app was found guilty of a data breach. it was capable of confirming whether a smartphone\u2019s screen was on or off, the usage of cellular data in bytes and if Wi-Fi was being used or not. Onavo Protect was taken down from the iOS app store since it violated the iOS\u2019 stringent guidelines that discourage the collection of data while using other apps. Onavo is still available on the play store and has been installed more than 10 million times.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Does_the_Onavo_Application_Do\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>What Does the Onavo Application Do?<\/b><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The research application, christened \u2018Project Atlas\u2019 (in some of the documentation, helped Facebook in a data breach. It extracted personal data (over 30 attributes) by tracking smartphone users\u2019 activities on multiple applications in order to comprehend users\u2019 attitudes towards the third-party applications.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The application has also been placed in the bad books because of its invasive nature as it reads users\u2019 messages in social media apps, non-e2e messages, web searches, as well as activities. It can pinpoint the user\u2019s location as well. The application is so capable that, in many instances, data can even be collected from apps that use encryption.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_was_Facebook_Blamed\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Why was Facebook Blamed?<\/b><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The confirmation of the attack came from Facebook, and they cited that \u2018old data\u2019 was leaked in the attack. And the vulnerability of this leak has already been patched in 2019. The exposed data was exploited by threat actors to carry out an array of <span style=\"color: #183994;\"><a style=\"color: #183994;\" href=\"https:\/\/threatcop.com\/blog\/cybercrime\/\"><strong>cybercrimes<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, including identity theft, impersonation scams, <span style=\"color: #183994;\"><a style=\"color: #183994;\" href=\"https:\/\/threatcop.com\/blog\/sms-phishing-scam-ocbc-bank\/\"><strong>SMS spam<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, and extortion attempts.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;A database of that size containing the private information such as phone numbers of a lot of Facebook\u2019s users would certainly lead to bad actors taking advantage of the data to perform social engineering attacks [or] hacking attempts&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">\u2013 Alon Gal, CTO of a cybercrime intelligence firm<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Notably, this isn\u2019t the first time that the personal information of Facebook users has been exposed online. The vulnerability uncovered in 2019 led to the exposure of phone numbers of millions of users from Facebook\u2019s servers. Also, during the 2016 election, Cambridge Analytica scraped 80 million users\u2019 data to target voters with political ads.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The National Privacy Commission (NPC) is currently investigating the large-scale data leak that has affected around half a billion social media users globally. Cybersecurity experts worldwide are urging Facebook users to secure their social media accounts immediately.
