Examples include a banner on an email from outside the company, or a warning before a link opens. Research shows that prompts like these can change behavior. It also shows that design decides how well they work. In one study of 25 million real warnings, users clicked through as few as one in ten of some warnings and as many as seven in ten of another. So the question is not whether to nudge, but how to build a prompt people actually heed.

Table of Contents

Toggle

What a Security Nudge Is, and What It Is Not

Why Timing Beats Content

Book a Free Demo Call with Our Expert

What the Evidence Shows

Design Rules for Security Nudges

How to Test a Security Nudge

Where Nudges Fit Next to Training

Close the Loop With Reporting

The Bottom Line

Frequently Asked Questions

What a Security Nudge Is, and What It Is Not

A security nudge is guidance delivered inside the decision. It is not a course, and it is not a block. A course teaches in advance, while a block stops the action. A nudge sits between them. It says “pause, and here is why,” then leaves the choice to the person.

Common forms of security nudges include:

Banners marking an email as external or from a first-time sender.

Warnings that a link points to a recently registered domain.

Prompts when a reply would go to a different address than the sender’s.

Confirmations when a sensitive file is about to leave the company.

Reminders to check a payment change through a known phone number.

Filters cannot judge intent, so that is exactly where nudges help. Email filters miss real phishing when a message looks clean, and a nudge lets the recipient notice what the filter cannot.

Why Timing Beats Content

A lesson delivered in advance fades. A lesson delivered after a mistake has a different problem. At UC San Diego Health, users spent under one minute on the embedded training page in over 75% of sessions, according to a study of 19,500 employees by Grant Ho, Stefan Savage, and colleagues. In many sessions, they left within seconds.

But a nudge avoids that failure. It appears inside the task, not on a separate page the person can dismiss. So the person sees it while the decision is still open, and the warning can change what happens next.

Think of a printed map and a navigation app. The map shows the road as it was when printed. The app reroutes as conditions change. Training is the map, and security nudges are the live rerouting. Behaviour change tools combine both.

Threatcop – Book a Free Demo

.tc-wrap , .tc-wrap ::before, .tc-wrap ::after { box-sizing: border-box; They observed over 25 million browser warnings in real use in a USENIX Security study by Devdatta Akhawe and Adrienne Porter Felt. Users heeded most warnings. Even so, the design changed the result sharply.

Warning type

Browser

Share of users who clicked through

Malware and phishing

Firefox

About one in ten

Malware and phishing

Chrome

About one in four

SSL certificate

Firefox

About one in three

SSL certificate

Chrome

70.2%

So bypass rates ranged from about 10% to 70% across different warnings. The authors concluded that the user experience of a warning can have a significant impact on behavior.

However, one caution applies. The study dates from 2013, and browser designs have changed since. Treat the numbers as proof that design matters, not as current rates.

Design Rules for Security Nudges

In practice, good security nudges share six traits.

Appear at the decision. A warning before or after the choice does little.

Give one specific reason. “This sender has never emailed you” beats “Be careful.”

Make the safe action the easy one. Put a Report or Verify button beside the warning.

Allow a deliberate bypass. Blocking everything breeds workarounds.

Keep warnings rare. Constant warnings teach people to ignore them, which researchers call warning fatigue.

Measure heeding. Track how often people pause, report, or proceed, using human risk metrics, and retire prompts that nobody heeds.

How to Test a Security Nudge

Security nudges need testing, because the study above shows that differences in warning design went with very different bypass rates. A simple test works well.

Show two wordings of the same security nudge to two matched groups. For example, one banner might say “External sender,” and the other might say “This sender has never emailed you.” Then compare three numbers: how often people pause, how often they report, and how often they proceed. Run the test long enough for the novelty to wear off, because a new banner always gets extra attention at first.

Also watch the false-alarm rate. A nudge that fires on harmless mail trains people to ignore it. If the heed rate falls over several weeks, simplify the prompt, show it less often, or retire it.

Where Nudges Fit Next to Training

Security nudges do not replace training. Training builds the judgment that lets someone understand why a banner appeared. Then nudges deliver that judgment at the moment it counts. Knowing what to do and being prompted to do it are separate jobs, and a program needs both.

People can also feed the system back. A navigation app improves when drivers report a closed road. Staff who report a suspicious message do the same for their colleagues, which is why reporting matters as much as the warning itself.

Close the Loop With Reporting

A nudge asks the person to pause. The next question is where that pause goes. Threatcop Phishing Incident Response (TPIR) gives it somewhere to go. One-click reporting from email and WhatsApp means a suspicion costs seconds, and employees can check a message’s threat level before they decide to report it.

TPIR then runs header analysis, link and attachment scanning, an IP reputation check, and deceptive domain verification in a sandbox. So the security team receives an assessment rather than a guess. TPIR returns genuine mail to the inbox and deletes malicious mail, while its “Who Else” insight shows which other mailboxes received the same message. One person’s pause then protects everyone. Because TPIR measures what gets reported and how fast, the team also sees whether its nudges are actually changing behavior, and which prompts people ignore.

The Bottom Line

Security nudges work when they appear at the decision, give one clear reason, and make the safe action easy. The evidence is encouraging and humbling at once. Users heeded most browser warnings, but one warning was ignored seven times in ten, a rate the authors called undesirable. So treat every nudge as a design problem, not a checkbox. Keep warnings rare, put a Report button beside them, and measure how often people actually pause. Then connect the prompt to a fast reporting route, so one person’s caution becomes protection for the whole organization.

Frequently Asked Questions

         What is a security nudge?

A security nudge is a brief prompt shown at the moment of a risky decision, such as a banner on an external email or a warning before a link opens.
