Attackers use the exact same technique to research employees, map corporate hierarchies, and build the personal detail that makes a phishing email or a phone call convincing.

Table of Contents

Toggle

What OSINT Actually Means

How Attackers Actually Use OSINT Against Employees

Book a Free Demo Call with Our Expert

Why This Bypasses Traditional Security Controls

Reducing OSINT Exposure Without Banning Social Media

The Research Phase Is the Part Nobody Trains For

Frequently Asked Questions

What OSINT Actually Means

Open-source intelligence (OSINT) refers to any information gathered from sources that are legally and publicly accessible: social media profiles, company websites, press releases, public records, forum posts, even metadata embedded in photos. Nothing about OSINT requires hacking, exploiting a vulnerability, or accessing anything private. That is precisely what makes it dangerous. An attacker never has to breach a system to gather it; they only have to pay attention to what people and organizations already put in public view.

Security teams use OSINT defensively, tracking their own organization’s public footprint to find exposed credentials, misconfigured assets, or oversharing employees before an attacker does. Threat actors use the same techniques offensively, and for social engineering specifically, OSINT is usually the first step, not an afterthought. This is the same reconnaissance-first pattern behind why social engineering remains so effective even as employees get better at spotting obviously fake emails.

How Attackers Actually Use OSINT Against Employees

The research phase of a targeted social engineering attack looks less like hacking and more like casual social media scrolling, at scale and with a purpose.

Viral personal-detail trends double as reconnaissance. A “post your first car” or “name your childhood pet” trend produces exactly the kind of detail used in security questions and account recovery flows. An attacker mining these posts at scale gets a shortcut past the questions meant to verify identity.

Professional platforms map the org chart for free. LinkedIn connections, job titles, and “excited to announce” posts hand an attacker the reporting structure needed to convincingly impersonate a manager, a vendor, or a finance approver in a business email compromise attempt.

Public video and audio become voice-cloning source material. A short clip from a conference talk, a company town hall posted publicly, or even an Instagram story provides enough audio for current voice-cloning tools to produce a convincing impersonation. Published minimums across commercial and research voice-cloning tools cluster between 3 and 30 seconds of clean audio, well within what a typical public video clip provides.

Location and routine posts enable timing attacks. An out-of-office post or a travel photo tells an attacker exactly when a target, and the colleagues who’d normally verify a request with them, are unavailable to double-check anything.

None of this requires technical sophistication. It requires patience and a search engine, which is exactly why OSINT-driven social engineering scales so well for attackers and is so hard to block with technical controls alone.

Threatcop – Book a Free Demo

.tc-wrap , .tc-wrap ::before, .tc-wrap ::after { box-sizing: border-box; OSINT-driven social engineering often produces none of those signals. Spear phishing built on real personal and professional detail reads as legitimate because, factually, much of it is. The email references a real project, a real colleague, a real recent event, because the attacker found all of it in public. The same research feeds AI-driven deepfake scams, where a cloned voice built from scraped public audio adds a layer no email filter was ever built to catch.

This is also why the attack surface has quietly expanded past the corporate perimeter. An employee’s personal social media activity, posted from a personal device on a personal account, sits entirely outside anything a company’s security stack can see or control, yet it directly feeds the reconnaissance used against that same employee at work.

Reducing OSINT Exposure Without Banning Social Media

Telling employees to stop using social media is not a realistic security control. A few targeted habits meaningfully shrink what’s available to an attacker:

Treat security questions as passwords, not trivia. Any answer that could plausibly appear in a social media post, a first car, a pet’s name, a hometown, should never double as an account recovery credential.

Review what public-facing content reveals about org structure and workflows. A press release or a LinkedIn post announcing a new finance hire, paired with their reporting line, is a ready-made pretext for a BEC attempt.

Extend awareness of reconnaissance-driven pretexts to personal digital habits, not just corporate inboxes, since the reconnaissance that enables a workplace attack increasingly happens on channels the workplace never sees, and role-based training can target this gap for the employees whose public profiles carry the most exploitable detail.

Treat unexpected voice or video requests with the same skepticism as an unexpected email, given how little source material current voice-cloning tools actually need, a single public clip is often enough.

Build reporting habits for anything that references unusually specific personal detail, since a request that references something oddly private is a stronger tell than one that merely sounds urgent, a pattern insider threat research consistently finds is easier to catch through reporting culture than through technical filtering alone.

The Research Phase Is the Part Nobody Trains For

Most security awareness training covers what to do once a suspicious email lands. Almost none of it covers the research phase that made that email convincing in the first place, the OSINT-gathering that happened on channels the security team never saw. Closing that gap means treating employees’ public digital footprint as part of the organization’s actual attack surface, not a personal matter outside security’s scope.

Security awareness training that includes how attackers research targets, not just how to spot the resulting email, gives employees the context to recognize why a message feels so specifically tailored to them, which is often the only warning sign OSINT-driven attacks leave behind.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is OSINT in cyber security?

OSINT, or open-source intelligence, is the practice of collecting and analyzing publicly available information, social media, public records, websites, to build a picture of a target.
