color: #000000;\">Think of <a href=\"https:\/\/threatcop.com\/blog\/spf-authentication\/\">Sender Policy Framework (SPF)<\/a> as your email server&#8217;s guest list for your domain. It is a record you publish in your Domain Name System (DNS) of the IP addresses you want to pre-authorize to send email on behalf of your domain.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Here is how SPF works:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">When a receiving mail server gets an email, it checks the sender&#8217;s IP against the SPF record.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">If the IP is present on the list, it passes SPF; otherwise, it fails.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">SPF only evaluates the \u201cenvelope sender\u201d (the hidden return-path address used for email delivery). It does not get evaluated against the From: address that is visible to an email recipient, which is all that the recipient will see in their inbox.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_DKIM\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>What is DKIM?<\/b><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/threatcop.com\/blog\/dkim\/\">Domain Keys Identified Mail (DKIM)<\/a> is like a digital notary stamp on your emails. It adds a cryptographic signature to prove two things:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Authenticity:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The email actually came from your domain.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Integrity:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The email hasn\u2019t been changed during transit.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Here\u2019s how DKIM works:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Your sending server uses a private key to sign every email sent.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">A receiving server looks up your public key, which is stored in DNS, to verify the DKIM signature.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">If the key is valid, then the email is evaluated as good.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The domain in the DKIM signature matches the From: address. So, for example, a phishing email could make it into your inbox if it were able to get a valid DKIM signature from a legitimate domain.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_DMARC\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>What is DMARC?&nbsp;<\/b><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">This is where Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance (<a href=\"https:\/\/threatcop.com\/blog\/what-is-dmarc\/\">DMARC<\/a>) comes into play.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">SPF is the guest list, DKIM is the notary stamp, and DMARC serves as the security guard enforcing the policies defined by what you actually see in the From: field.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>This is what DMARC adds:<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Alignment:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> To pass DMARC, the domain in the visible From: must match (or align) with the domain that passed either SPF or DKIM. This closes the gaps that SPF and DKIM open on their own.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Policy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As the domain owner, you decide what happens when an email fails:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>p=none<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2192 Just monitor (collect reports, take no action).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>p=quarantine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2192 Send it to the spam folder.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>p=reject<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2192 Block it outright.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Reporting:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> DMARC enables you to get daily feedback reports to see who is sending email using your domain, both legitimate senders and attackers.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_It_All_Works_Together_to_Protect_Your_Domain\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>How It All Works Together to Protect Your Domain<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The real benefit is when SPF, DKIM, and DMARC work together. Below is the simple flow:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Email is sent: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your mail server signs the email with DKIM and sends it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>DNS records are checked: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It checks your SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>SPF and DKIM validation: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Was the email sent from a server that is &#8220;approved&#8221; (SPF)? Is the digital signature legitimate (DKIM)?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>DMARC check:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Did at least one of those checks &#8220;pass,&#8221; and does the domain match the visible &#8220;From:&#8221; address?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Policy is applied:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If an email does not pass DMARC, the receiving server will follow your policy: do nothing, allow it in spam, or just reject it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Reports are sent:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You will receive continuous daily DMARC reports that show who is sending email using your domain and whether they passed or failed the specified checks.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Do_You_Need_All_Three\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Why Do You Need All Three?<\/b><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Using only one is like locking the front door but leaving all the windows wide open.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">SPF cannot stop someone from faking the visible &#8220;From&#8221; address.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">DKIM can validate a signature that comes from the wrong domain.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Without DMARC, an enforcement policy does not exist, nor is there visibility into who is impersonating you.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">That&#8217;s why you need the full package: SPF + DKIM + DMARC.
